Groundwater Depletion : A Dry Future of India

Groundwater is one of the most important water sources in india, accounting for 63% of all irrigation water and over 80% of the rural and urban domestic water supplies. Ground water is also vital for the industrial sector in a large measure . Hence growth in both agriculture and industry is a threat.  Hiw india is able to manage her ground water resources. 
         A serious groundwater crisis  prevauls currently in india due to excessive over extraction and groundwater contamination covering nearly 60% of all districts in india and risk to drinking water security of all population. Since the 1960s india's groundwater irrigation has increased dramatically. 



      Negative Effect of groundwater depletion
   Groundwater depletion is primary caused by sustained ground water pumping. Some of the  negative effects of groundwater  effect of ground water depletion are following.:
   
Lowering the water table : —    Excessive   pumping can lower the ground water table,  and cause wells to no longer be able reachs
